PROJECT TEAM: GOAT (Architecture and Interiors)
Formerly an independent bookstore and a doctor’s office, this historic two-story craftsman structure in New Orleans’ oldest suburb has seen many iterations. After years of disuse, its current adaptation is as the home of GOAT principal and co-founder, Peter Spera III and his family. Priority was placed on maintaining the exterior character and rejuvenating the home’s street presence on a prominent corner in Gretna. The craftsman detailing was painstakingly restored, including re-glazing the more than 50 original windows that wrap the entire house. On the interior, the space was reinvented entirely to meet the requirements of modern lifestyles and GOAT’s contemporary design aesthetic. Some of the more exquisite details were reconditioned, however, and are featured prominently: hardwood flooring, coffered ceilings, built-in bookshelves, and the wraparound entry stair are combined with fresh fixtures, finishes, and a funky color palette. The result is a dramatic, modern home within a lovingly restored, historic shell.
