Eustis Mortgage has provided home lending to New Orleans residents for over 60 years. Having grown to service the entire Gulf South region, the company’s new CEO, Kate deKay, engaged GOAT to help re-launch the company in a new, contemporary office space located on the ground floor of ‘The Standard’. The Domain Companies’ new mixed-use high rise in the desirable South Market District provided the perfect shell for Eustis’ next iteration.
The new office is a combination of flexible, contemporary co-working style spaces and semi-private glass door offices. The client’s program required (12) private offices for the company’s senior staff, open workspace with (18) desks, and the ability to accommodate future expansion. To achieve this within a minimal footprint, GOAT developed a layout that centralizes the shared areas and open workspaces, maximizing the penetration of daylight from the west facing exterior wall. Glass doored offices line the perimeter of the shell, overlooking the open spaces.

The base program takes the entirety of the shell’s floor area. To allow for the ability to grow in the near future, GOAT developed the scheme to include a large open mezzanine overlooking the open workspaces. As the nature of office work is upended by the COVID-19 pandemic, the flexibility provided by this extra space will also allow Eustis the ability to quickly adapt to distancing measures. The need for a mezzanine also provided the opportunity to create a high impact feature stair at the entry to the space. Constructed from ebony stained plywood and hardwood studs, the feature stair sets the aesthetic tone for the entire project and acts as the space’s organizing focal point.
In order to make the most of the project’s limited budget, GOAT strategically deployed affordable, readily available materials like plywood, 2x4 studs and 1x2 trim molding to create high impact design features, such as the reception desk and mezzanine stair. The application of humble materials in uncommon ways is a hallmark of GOAT’s work and requires an intensive attention to detail during the design’s development. The quality of the execution of these details is a credit to Perrier Esquerre’s commitment to craftsmanship. The final finish palette complements Eustis’ recent re-branding and showcases Ms. deKay’s sophisticated tastes. Polished concrete, ebony stained wood, glass, and occasional pops of bold color provide the perfect backdrop for Eustis’ next 60 years.
