Project Spotlight: Historic Gretna Structure Transformed Into Modern Home

Located in Gretna, one of Louisiana's largest national historic register districts and New Orleans’ oldest suburb, is GOAT’s residential renovation of a two-story craftsman structure.

The historic 3,000-foot structure was formerly an independent bookstore and a doctor’s office. After years of disuse, its current adaptation is as the home of GOAT principal and co-founder, Peter Spera III and his family.

The craftsman detailing was painstakingly restored, including reglazing more than 50 original windows that wrap around the entire home. “Priority was placed on maintaining the exterior character and rejuvenating the home’s street presence on a prominent corner in Gretna,” shared Spera.

On the interior, the space was reinvented entirely to meet the requirements of modern lifestyles and GOAT’s contemporary design aesthetic. The home features reconditioned elements such as the hardwood flooring, coffered ceilings, built-in bookshelves, and a wraparound entry stair. Modern fixtures and finishes, plus a funky color palette, were also added during the renovation.

“The result is a dramatic, modern home within a lovingly restored, historic shell,” continued Spera.
